Founded in 1884, the University of Wales, Bangor has a long tradition of academic excellence which continues to this day. Ranked within the top 35 universities in the UK - and top in Wales- (The Guardian, May 2003), the University prides itself both on the quality of education as well as the quality of life offered to the 8,000 students who choose to study here each year.
Situated between the mountains of Snowdonia and the sea, Bangor’s stunning location is one of the many attractions for students, who also enjoy the friendliness and special atmosphere of what is very much a university city. The same friendly, student-centred ethos is very much in evidence within the University, with the high priority placed on student support being reflected in the fact that Bangor has one of the lowest drop-out rates in the UK.
The University guarantees accommodation for all first year students, with over 2,100 rooms available on four sites which are within easy walking distance of the academic buildings and the city centre. Exchange schemes, work placements, summer vacation schemes and volunteering opportunities are amongst the programmes offered to Bangor students to enable them to make the most out of their time at university, while Bangor also has one of the largest Peer Guiding schemes of any university to help new students settle in during their first weeks at University.
Particular subject strengths include
- Ocean and Environmental Sciences (the University is ideally situated for the study of all things environmental with Geography, Marine Biology and Zoology being popular options);
- Psychology (Bangor’s School of Psychology is internationally known for its research and teaching);
- Sports Sciences (rated 2nd in the UK).
- Smaller departments which are rated highly for the quality of their teaching include Chemistry, Music, and Theology and Religious Studies.
