De Montfort University

De Montfort University (DMU) is a distinctive, forward-looking institution. With over 23,000 students and 4,500 staff based in Bedford and Leicester. DMU is one of the largest universities in the country and has recently announced a £50 million pound investment.

DMU offers over 400 courses ranging from FE to PhD level. At DMU we believe in building on and concentrating on our strengths and draw heavily on our roots of excellence in vocational education to ensure our students are prepared for life.

De Montfort University has two campuses in Leicester: Charles Frears and Leicester City. Charles Frears, the home of nursing and midwifery, is located in a 19th century mock Jacobean mansion some two miles from the city centre. Bordered by historic Castle Gardens and the River Soar, Leicester City Campus is located in the heart of the city close to Leicester's shopping centre, cinemas, theatres and museums. Its architecture ranges from the medieval origins of Trinity House, to the Victorian grandeur of the Hawthorn Building and the state-of-the-art Queens Building, which has won several awards for its environmentally friendly construction and design. A wide variety of courses are offered at Leicester City, including Art and Design, Applied Sciences, Business and Law, Computing and Engineering, Education, and Humanities and Social Sciences.

DMU Bedford is located on two campuses within the town. The Lansdowne Campus on the western side of Bedford is situated in a quiet leafy district and is the base for Physical Education, Sport and Leisure, Environmental Studies and the Performing Arts. The campus has excellent facilities, including three gymnasia, an indoor heated swimming pool, a fitness suite and dance studio. The Polhill Campus, on the eastern side of town, is home to Primary Education, Humanities, Business Studies, and Sociology. Facilities at Polhill include the Primary Centre, a teaching block designed and equipped to have the atmosphere and facilities of a typical primary school, a new six million pound library complex which opened in 2001, a gymnasium, and extensive playing fields.

De Montfort is the top post-1992 university for research according to the 2001 Government Research Assessment Exercise and in the Q&A audit which took place in March 2001 was positive for the university. It confirmed that our arrangements for managing the quality of academic provision are sound and command confidence.
