Introduction

The university is located in Hertfordshire, just ten miles north of London. In September 2003 we opened the £120 million de Havilland campus, the largest development in Higher Education in the UK.

About UH

There are over 20,000 students from almost 100 different countries studying full and part-time, on a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. We have 16 schools spread over our three campuses. Some of the schools based at the College Lane campus include:

  • School of Art and Design
  • School of Aerospace, Automotive and Engineering.
  • School of Nursing and Midwifery
  • School of Combined Studies
  • School of Life Sciences

The Business School, School of Humanities and School of Education are based at the new de Havilland campus. The University School of Law is based at the centre of the region's legal community in St. Albans. We are excellently located in terms of motorways (M1, A1(M) and M25), national railways and access to major international airports. The University of Hertfordshire operates the world's largest university-owned public transport network 'Universitybus', which provides easy and effective travel throughout Hertfordshire and North London.

de Havilland Campus

Cycleways, footpaths and shuttlebuses are used to link the new campus, which is a short distance, from the established College Lane campus. This allows the university to operate for the first time as virtually a single campus university.

In September 2003 students from the Business School, School of Humanities and School of Education moved to the new de Havilland campus. The campus features state-of-the-art teaching facilities, a 460-seat auditorium and an impressive Learning Resources Centre making full use of the latest technological developments. The on-campus sports provision is amongst the finest in the entire region. The campus is the home of the Hertfordshire Sports Village, which offers quality facilities of national standard for people of all ages and ability. Facilities include a main sports hall housing twelve badminton courts, also available for volleyball, basketball, netball and 5-a-side football, a 25 metre eight lane swimming pool, a four lane indoor cricket centre, a 12 metre high climbing wall, three grass football pitches, one grass rugby pitch, three floodlit full sized Astroturf pitches for football, rugby and hockey. As well as 'Vision', the 100-station health and fitness centre.

There is extensive on-campus accommodation with 1,600 en-suite places in halls of residence, specified to the highest standards, all with broadband Internet connections.

Hertfordshire

Living in Hertfordshire gives you the best of both worlds: busy local towns with their own clubs, pubs, cinemas and shopping centres spread out across relaxed and pleasant countryside. Hertfordshire is also one of the safest counties in the UK. As an added bonus, Central London is just 20 minutes by train for those special occasions when you want to enjoy the nightlife or the cultural attractions of the capital city.

Facilities

Study facilities on-campus are outstanding. Both College Lane and de Havilland campuses have state-of-the-art Learning Resources Centres. Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, giving access to 2,700 study places all with Internet access. Students studying at the University have their own personal StudyNet account. The ground-breaking e-education system is accessible via the Internet, giving students access to their own personal portal of information including lecture notes, course details and Email.

Accommodation

When you come to university, it is important for you to be confident about where you are going to live. We provide an extensive and excellent range of on-campus and off-campus accommodation. College Lane campus has five traditional purpose-built halls with facilities for self-catering. Along side a development of houses and self-contained flats for 6-8 students. As long as you remember to meet the qualifying dates, we can guarantee you a place in university accommodation for your first year of study.

Social Life

Your social life on campus is likely to revolve around the Students' Union. The Union provides entertainment throughout the year, ranging from live shows and gigs to a big summer ball. You will also find a varied programme of artistic and cultural events to enjoy, which are organised by the University's UH Arts programme, where there is a chance to perform yourself.
