Southampton Institute is the largest general college of higher education in the UK, with almost 11,000 full-time equivalent students who come from all over the world. Our courses are designed to meet the needs of today's economy and the requirements of employers, employment and career-minded students.

We are primarily a teaching institution but have built a good reputation in our areas of mainly applied research: design and advanced technology, maritime, fine art, history of collecting, film, media and cultural studies, political and international studies, law and a broad range of business disciplines.

The Institute prides itself on opening doors to higher education. Many of our students are from backgrounds which may not traditionally have entered higher education, and we work with them to help them achieve their academic potential.

The Institute is seeking its own degree awarding powers as a first step towards university status. But the Institute is not just about teaching or research. A diverse range of other activities - cultural, recreational, commercial and communal - is supported by and reinforces the Institute's academic work.
