. . . Social Life - Societies
Student Societies

Some people find it difficult to meet people when they arrive at university. It's up to you how you go about settling into university life. The university will make it as easy as possible for you to meet people, especially if you're an international student. During the first few weeks you'll be expected to go to induction events - a look round the library, a tour of the campus and you'll have meetings to introduce your lecturers. The truth is you'll forget almost everything you're told only to discover it for yourself, but you will get a chance to chat to the other students who you'll be spending the next three years with.

If you find that no one on your course is 'your type', you should investigate the societies on offer by the students union. There are countless clubs to join ranging with titles such as 'Rock Climbing Club' and 'Christian Society', to 'Drinking Coffee Society' and even more obscure names, such as a society at the University of Cambridge called 'Shiela and Her Dog'.

It is worth getting involved with something at your union. You will probably have a lot of free time, and filling this with TV, drinking and sleeping isn't very productive. If there's not a society that you want to join, you could start your own. Apart from societies, you'll have the opportunity to become involved in the running of the students union (working on the students union own publication is a great way of getting press passes to gigs and loads of free CDs). You could even be the next president of your union!
